The Ranch, Mercedes

From Montevideo it was around a 4 hour (very bumpy) ride to our Ranch in Mercedes. We were going to be spending 2 nights on the local ranch and it’s probably the thing I’d been looking forward to the most about travelling in Uruguay. Other travellers I’d met had said it was also their favourite thing and the best way to experience the culture.
The location was really beautiful and as we were basically in the middle of nowhere it was also so peaceful. The ranch could sleep up to 50 people with a mixture or dorms and private rooms. It was often used as a venue for a wedding so we were lucky it was available for us to stay in during high season.

Not long after we arrived we had lunch before our afternoon activity - Fishing! Sadly (luckily for the fish) I was pretty bad at fishing and didn’t catch any fish…No dinner for me! After dinner we had a camp fire, watched the sunset and I drank lots of red wine.
On day 2 we had a pretty packed day, milking the cows, horse riding, making empanadas and again drinking more red wine and playing cards!

I really enjoyed my 2 days on the ranch and it was nice to have some relaxing time in the country before my 18 hour bus ride to Iguazu falls. Luckily this was the last night bus of my whole trip. Hallelujah! My next post will all be about my visit to Iguazu!
